GERARD BUTLER CONQUERS THE PUBLIC AND ITALIAN CRITICS. HE IS HOLLYWOOD'S LATEST SEDUCER. WE ARE NOW AWAITING "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA," BY JOEL SCHUMACHER, IN THEATRES THIS CHRISTMAS

E-mail Print PDF
Ischia 8/20/2004 At thirty-four years old, with a powerful physique, and
with the face of a scoundrel in "Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life," with
Angelina Jolie, he is the new favorite of female moviegoers around the
world: Gerard Butler, who has made the transition from unsuccessful lawyer
to Hollywood sex-symbol. At the latest Ischia Global Fest he has already
conquered the public and critics, who are now waiting to see if he passes
the next test of his talent with "The Phantom of the Opera," for director
Joel Schumacher, the American director who has chosen him over Antonio
Banderas and John Travolta for the part of Andrew Lloyd Weber's classic,
well-known character. After a vacation with some friends at the Regina
Isabella Hotel & Spa, Gerry is flying to London to prepare for his next
film, in which he will play a legendary Viking.

We are also awaiting "Dear Frankie" - to be distributed worldwide in
mid-October by Miramax International. Gerry is certainly keeping busy!

This year, it is on Raiuno with Federica De Denero. In 2000, it was on Stream TV with Yvonne Sciò, and in 2002 and 2003 on Raidue with the Brigliadori and Clarissa Burt, respectively.

CHINA, THE NEW POPULAR CINEMA
FIVE PREVIEWS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NEAR EAST FILM FESTIVAL

After 2003's first edition examined the film production of Bollywood, the Ischia Global Fest aims its spotlight this year at the Chinese market and its most interesting products, previewing five films that are brand new to Italy. These original films showcase the new Chinese popular cinema that is little seen outside China, but reveals much about the people, changes, humor and other characteristics of that fast-evolving immense country. The films are:

MY BITTERSWEET TAIWAN by Zheng Dongtian (China 2004, 90 minutes)

A LOVE OF BLUENESS by Huo Jianqi (China 2002, 96 minutes)

WHEN RUOMA WAS SEVENTEEN by Zhang Jiarui (China 2003, 89 minutes)

PRETTY BIG FEET by Yang Yazhou (China 2002,103 minutes)

GONE IS THE ONE WHO HELD ME DEAREST IN THE WORLD by Ma Xiaoying (China
2002, 95 minutes)

Among the hosts of the review will be actor Yang Zhigong, star of "When Ruoma was Seventeen".

The review has been accomplished in collaboration with Far East Film Festival of Udine, which held its seventh edition this spring. It is the only Italian festival dedicated to contemporary Asian film production, and shows each year the innovations of the cinema of the Far East.

The Far East Festival Film also has provided its Gallery To Far East Festival" to Villa Arbusto. The gallery includes 30 images from recent productions of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, The Philippines, Japan, Singapore and Thailand. These images further demonstrate the tastes and interests of the emerging Far East market.

William Walton Prize to the Blues Brothers Band

The legendary Blues Brothers Band will receive the prestigious William Walton Award on the concluding evening of the 2nd Global Film & Music Fest at a presentation dedicated to the memory of Ray Charles, who died June 10, 2004. The band became famous in the 1980 John Landis cult film, The Blues Brothers, that starred John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. They also participated in a sequel, Blues Brothers 2000, and have toured the world bringing the blues to new audiences. The presentation on July 16 will be at the Regina Isabella Hotel.

Ray Charles had a role as himself in The Blues Brothers. Participating at the presentation will be American producer Martin Richards (Oscar winner for 'Chicago') and Francesco Sanavio, who for some 30 years traveled with Charles arranging his European tours. The Walton prize, presented last year to Andrea Bocelli, will be presented by Lady Susan Walton, widow of the great English musician who chose Ischia as their residence.

The Blues Brothers Band of 10 musicians includes four of its original members. They gained a triple platinum record for Briefcase Full of Blues. The band will be led at Global Fest by founder Steve The Colonel Cropper, one of the living legends of rock. Among the band members are Lou "Blue Lou" Marini (sax), Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin (trumpet), "Smokin" John Tropea (guitar) Anthony "Rusty" Cloud (keyboards), Eric "The Red" Udel (bass), Clint "The Cannon" De Ganon (drums), Rob "Honeydripper" (voice and harmonica), and Eddie Knock on Wood Floyd, special vocal guest.

In the film, Ray Charles had a featured cameo in which he sang 'Shake Your Tailfeather' with the Blues Brothers. Another cameo starred Fats Domino performing I'm Walkin.

The Prize is dedicated to the memory of Isabella Rizzoli, daughter of the producer and entrepreneur Angelo Rizzoli, who died tragically in 1990. She was a sensitive, curious girl of the world who loved life and young people. Her mother, Lijuba, and godmother, Marina Cicogna, offer the award as an opportunity to help two young future artists find their way in the cinema world.

ISCHIA ARTS AWARDS HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO DANTE FERRETTI AND JULIE TAYMOR AT OPENING EVENT OF ISCHIA GLOBAL FEST - JULY 11 AT REGINA ISABELLA RESORT

E-mail Print PDF
ISCHIA, Italy The great art director Dante Ferretti, pride of the Italian cinema for such films as Gangs of New York and Martin Scorseses upcoming The Aviator, and the brilliant director Julie Taymor (Titus, Frida) has been honored on the inaugural evening of the Ischia Global Film and Music Fest July 11 at the Regina Isabella Hotel in Lacco Ameno on the Italilan island of Ischia.

The prizes to Ferretti and Taymor are part of the effort of the Ischia International Academy of Art to honor the work of world leaders in the film arts. The program of Ischia 2004 is on the official website at www.ischiaglobal.com

Ferretti has been working most recently on Scorseses set in Canada where he has reconstructed the private study of the mythical Howard Hughes for the megaproduction about the life of the pioneering but eccentric mid-20th Century aviator and industrialist. The film, starring Leonardo Di Caprio as Hughes, is scheduled for release in December. RAI Cinema has acquired the distribution rights for Italy.

This summer the Italian art director is bringing his talents to the set of Brian de Palmas The Black Dahlia, the fictionalized version of the shocking 1947 Los Angeles murder of starlet Elizabeth Short. Based on a book by James Ellroy, the films leading woman will be Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation.)

Early in his career before going to the United States, Ferretti worked on films of Italian greats Pier Paolo Pasolini and Federico Fellini. His Pasolini credits include "The Decameron" 1971; "The Canterbury Tales" 1972; "The Arabian Nights" 1974; and "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom" 1975.
